“If our classroom walls could talk, they’d pour out the anguish expressed as men and women begin to share their stories, and then the confidence and empowerment adults gain as they learn skills for constructive parenting and relationship building. They’d also share about our children, who week to week talk about the extraordinary changes they’re experiencing at home.”
ESCAPE is dedicated to teaching Houston-area mothers and fathers, foster parents and grandparents the skills needed to raise and care for their children in appropriate ways. In ESCAPE classes, caregivers learn how to listen with patience and communicate with kindness.
Lidya K. Osadchey has been a resident of Houston for 30 years. She has been involved in many causes, including human justice and education. Lidya is the Founding Executive Director of the Holocaust Museum Houston and the former Director of Research at Texas Woman’s University. In May 2000, she was appointed CEO of the ESCAPE Family Resource Center. Its mission is to educate families in crisis to prevent child abuse and to build skills in parents and children to ensure a safe and nurturing family life.
Joining with ESCAPE to prevent child abuse are men and women and from the Houston community who donate their time, ideas and enthusiasm. We could not do all we do without their support.
When parents call in to register for a class, they think their child is ‘bad.’ After they begin learning new skills, a light bulb goes on and they see that they are part of the problem and they can begin to change.
