Governmental programs are needed to support and rehabilitate children and families who are caught in the cycle of abuse. These include—

• law enforcement;
• hospitalization and medical care;
• child welfare;
• foster care;
• adoption assistance;
• drug treatment programs.

Child abuse continues to be a social crisis in Greater Houston. Children's Protective Services opened 26,000 new cases in 2006. Of these, there were at least 7,000 confirmed incidents of physical abuse. ESCAPE educates and helps parents and caregivers learn ways to listen to and discipline their children. The ethnic makeup of the families who participate in our courses closely mirrors the population of Harris County.

Because ESCAPE receives no United Way, federal or state funding, we depend on the caring community that includes the Exchange Clubs, individuals, foundations, corporations, civic groups and religious associations for the funds needed to fulfill our mission.

•  A $25 gift helps us purchase materials used by families during our classes.
• A $40 gift allows an entire family going through a divorce learn ways to adjust to this traumatic change in their life by attending Families & Divorce free-of-charge.   
• A $100 gift helps us expand our presence across the Greater Houston area by establishing collaborations with other social service agencies in the most underserved neighborhoods of the community, such as Third Ward and Fifth Ward.
• A $375 gift allows a family of five learn how to cope with stress, communicate effectively, discipline without using punishment, and work together to solve their problems by participating in Building Confident Families at no cost.
• A $1,000 gift allows eight Spanish-speaking clients - parents and children - to receive fourteen hours of family skills training over a seven-week period by participating in Building Confident Families-Spanish at no cost.

Support ESCAPE’s family classes

ESCAPE reaches many who benefit from the programs.  I can still hear the voice of a teenage girl I met outside ESCAPE one early morning.  She described her excitement at graduating and all she learned to help her raise her four-year-old child.
